Tim Mayotte, an undergraduate student at Olivet Nazarene University who carried out the study said, “This itself is the first study that includes human cells to test the effects of hexavalent chromium and antioxidant protection. If new discoveries are further clinically and validated tested, it may be likely to treat high-risk fumes with antioxidants such as vitamin C to decrease the risk of cancer caused by hexavalent chromium.”

Mayotte will present this research at the annual meeting of the American Society of Biochemistry and Molecular Biology at the 2019 meeting on experimental biology from 6 to 9 April in Orlando, Florida.

In a study to determine whether antioxidants could avert cell toxicity, the researchers uncovered two types of human cells in dissimilar concentrations of hexavalent chromium. They witnessed toxic effects on both the cell types at higher concentrations of hexavalent chromium and 200 parts per billion (ppb).

In other experiments, the researchers observed an alteration in the DNA of bacteria exposed to hexavalent chromium at 20 ppb or more. However, these mutations did not happen when the bacteria were also treated with 20 ppm of vitamin C.

The new findings show that an oxidative mechanism is probably liable for the toxicity of the contaminant, which can be barred by treating water with antioxidants. These results can help change water quality regulation and monitoring.
